Flor

Hmm. Where do I start talking about Flor? Well, I met her when we went to Caltopia in the quest to win a Target dog. Yes, Max the Target dog is now happily sitting at home on the piano. Aside from that, I don't think I ever saw her AGAIN during that first semester. As for second semester, it got progressively better as this vampire emerged from her room. Let me describe her room to you. It was dark and squeaky clean. Note: Flor is a germaphobe (hypochondriac somewhat if you want to get technical). So besides vacuuming, Flor is always cleaning everything with her endless supply of Clorox wipes and home-made chemical cleaners.

Moving on...I spent a great deal of time in Flor's room ranging from writing essays to constructing a pinata (Shh. The pinata is a secret). But in truth, I didn't like Flor at first, well not her per se. It was actually her alarm clock that I despised. Because she often went home to LA almost every weekend, she would forget to turn off her alarm clock. Yes alarm clocks should be relatively loud to wake up the person; however, when the floor can hear the alarm clock from down the hall in the bathroom for 3 hours, it's bad. You're probably wondering why didn't her roommate shut off the stupid alarm clock? Well, there's a good explanation for that too. Her roommate wasn't there. It's not like she went home every weekend too. Sometimes she did, but most of the time she disappeared with a significant other who I don't think is as significant anymore.

So what else can I say about Flor? Well she's a Classics major who is addicted to youtube, boba, reading manga (I mean she's literally read all of the manga on mangafox.com and onemanga.net and she keeps daily updates on all of them), and pretty Asian boys who can pass off as manga characters (she believes that they are all vampires and that it's physically impossible for them to exist except for one-> Hero from the K-pop group DBSK). Though I am somewhat oblivious to pop culture, I do like listening to international music. It's interesting.

Now in the present day, Flor is currently my roommate. Though I have been warned about random moments of sleepwalking (she once came out with a band-aid on her forehead and she wasn't even hurt), I have successfully survived. I do sometimes end up a little sleep deprived because we get really hyper for no apparent reason at random times of the night. No we do not have problems, and no we are not insane. Everything is a figment in someone's imagination so it's all in whoever's perspective.

Back to School... AGAIN.

So I've finally settled back into the dorms at Cal. Driving up here was long and arduous (mostly for the driver). I think this time it felt more rushed. However, the craziest part of this trip was the amount of stuff that I had accumulated. Forget the essential school supplies like paper, highlighters and other stuff, I had managed to bring twice as much stuff as last year. Forget making do with everything, I don't know how it even happened. But let's get onto my room.

1. It is ginormously huge. Literally. It's actually twice the size of my real room at home. How sad. My roommate and I have effectively named our room "the tumbling room".
2. The closets and bathrooms have no doors strangely enough. It's a little bit awkward being able to see everything in your closet but having everyone else see everything in your closet (that includes the building next to and across from me)
3. There is no public bathroom or water fountain like the blueprint had indicated in May. I think that the space for the bathroom and water fountain were replaced with locked doors and extra sets of stairs.
4. This building has more than one entrance door, which makes things so much more convenient.
5. The elevators are super fast plus each floor tells you where the elevator is so that you won't be waiting forever.

Aside from that move-in went well. My roommate got a TV so we got to watch the Olympics closing ceremony before we got sucked into administrative details. First day of school went like any first day of school except I ended class at 6. I was a bit disappointed by that. Oh well. It's only once a week.

Comic strip updates:
8-26-08 Internet has returned :)
8-27-08 First day of school :(
future updates TBA

note: Updates might be a little slow only because I am back in school. Hopefully I can update whatever happened last year and start a new chapter about this year

Eevee

I'm not exactly sure how I met Eevee, but I do know that we much we both love Mae, Peanuts especially Snoopy, Comic-con, and Heroes. I have found someone who appreciates Snoopy as much as I do. The world is a better place now. Eevee is a really crafty person, crafty in that she can create banners and all sorts of decorations. The one thing I remember about her is that she named her electronic devices after the Peanuts gang. For example, her ipod is named Schroeder, which I thought it was quite cute and clever.

Monday nights are Heroes nights. Drop everything. Homework, youtube, facebook tetris and all, Heroes is on. Every Monday night during Heroes season, we all clutter on Crystal's bed to watch Heroes. Personally, I think the adventures of Hiro and Ando are much more amusing than Claire's; however, some of my floormates think that Heroes is worth watching because of Peter Petrelli. Truthfully, I have seen like one episode of the first season, but I caught on after watching the second season, which is about the same time I gave up on Lost. I'm not even sure if those people are lost on the island anymore. Oh well. My new show that I've discovered over the break is Pushing Daisies. Very cute and hilarious. What can I say? I am easily amused.

Christa

Here is Christa! She's the only health worker I've known, the person who saved me in biology, and is just fun to talk to. I guess the most awkward moment was the post-it game. So it was my birthday, and a bunch of my floormates and I were coming back from eating dinner at the Kimchi garden. Previously that week, there were invitations posted on the doors with candies attached to them inviting our floor to a "girl's night in". What more could you ask for? A social event for an all girl's floor to mingle with a lot more girls. Hooray (Please note the sarcasm). Of course, I was sold when it said the words free food and parfaits. Parfaits are my new discovery in college. I have never had one before, and I actually like it except the fact that granola is pretty bad for you calorie wise. Whatever, I'm young and I'll burn it off eventually.

Continuing onto the post-it game. As my floormates and I were coming back, we decided to see how well this "girl's night in" was going. Casually passing the APR, we heard silence. Hmm. Somehow one thing led to another, and we ended up helping set up and staying for a while. Anyways, this post it game works like this:

1. Grab a stack of post-its and a writing utensil.
2. Write on the post the very first impression you received about a person.
3. Stick that post it on that person's back
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you run out of post-its.
5. After everyone finishes, take the post it off your back and read aloud

Christa, casually coming to see how the "girl's night in" was progressing ended up getting pulled into the game too. It went something like this

(Christa walks into the APR looking confused. People look up and stare. Christa tries to turn around and walk back towards the door she came in)

Floormate: Christa, come join us in this fun post-it game
Christa: Oh. I see. I don't have any post-its
Someone: There's one on the wall and on the pool table
(Christa, confused, grabs the post-its and sits down in the circle)
[awkwardness continues]

-The end

Crystal

Here's Crystal. She has spread her manga loving joy to me. Now, occasionally (well, mostly when I don't feel like studying) I'm on mangafox.com or onemanga.net checking up for manga scan updates. Yes, I admit it. I am a nerd. Though I must also admit that I'm not as bad as some other people I know who basically have read the entire site and keeps up with the updates. At the moment, I only keep tabs on Special A and Ouran High School Host Club, which I hope will end soon. Sometimes I wonder why writers and artists drag out the end.

So how did I meet Crystal? During move-in week (back when the world had a move-in week), I met Crystal when we decided to go book shopping together. After browsing through Ned's bookstore and the Student Bookstore, I came out with a Chem 1A package, equipped with the lovely online OWL HW, lab manual, and a jumbo textbook that was left to collect dust in the corner of room (I will not recount the traumatic memories of chemistry). Also, I came out with the Math 1A textbook, which reminded me of my high school textbook, but with sections torn out, put together, and my personal favorite, with no index. I was surprised to find the textbook jump from page 300 to 1700, kind of like the room numbering in Dwinelle.

But now, Crystal and I enjoy being manga reading nerds, and now our new obsession, Heroes and Big Bang Theory. I guess obsession may be too strong of a word. How about, we are really enthusiastic about the upcoming episodes of these two shows; however, if we do miss these, we have the internet to thank because technology has provided us with another way to watch these shows. Fate is kind to us. Sometimes I think it's sad (in my point of view) to be laughing my head off when watching the Big Bang Theory only because I can understand their jokes. Sigh. Education does come in handy.

Ari

So I've decided that it might be fun to have each of the characters write a small profile about themselves. The first one I've finished making is Ari's. How can I sum up Ari briefly?
She is the most dedicated and hardworking chemical engineer I have ever met. The fact that she took on chemistry (I have no idea why) combined with engineering, kudos to her. But if you ask people to describe her in one word, normally it's...shady.

So why shady? I remember this one time I was looking for Ari. I was briskly walking down the 3rd floor Griffiths hall to see if she was there. I knew she was on the floor somewhere but had no idea where. So I decided to her room and ask her roommate Eevee. Since I couldn't find Ari, I ended up talking to Eevee about life and such. Then randomly I joked about what if I were to throw something on Ari's bed and see if anything happened. Being an oblivious person, I just assumed that there was a floating white sock on Ari's comforter rather than a foot. So I throw something up there and out pops Ari. I thought my heart popped. It was quite traumatizing something along the lines of a giant jack-in-the-box except without the box. Hands down tops a haunted house experience. I mean here she was lying on her bed, and Ari is so thin that she just disappears. Shady. Enough said. I won't even go into her possession of a Vietnamese cookbook. I have no idea what's in there.

To Tan Or Not To Tan

My apologies for the brief hiatus of this comic strip. I was on my vacation in the recent fire ravaged Yosemite. Actually in truth, the National Park was a peaceful and not at all smoky. I guess I got lucky in that I didn't have to camp while having to fear of getting secondhand smoke. To briefly summarize my camping trip in one word. Relaxing. Aside from the fact that I was technology deprived and away from the comfort of my bed, I would willing sacrifice that for a moment's peace.

Imagine this. Hiking through the tall redwood trees with the birds chirping and the occasional dear, maybe bear, passing in the distance. After reaching the end of the hike, you are standing in front of a powerful waterfall that creates a giant rainbow in front of your eyes (OK. So I didn't see a rainbow this year). Actually, we went a bit late so Yosemite Falls looked like a non-existent trickle in the distance) But because there were little waterfalls, I got to climb up the rocks that are normally drowning underwater, and I found a secret hidden placid pool breaming with sparkling water. Then, when your feet get tired from the long hike, you can easily go to the Merced River and dunk your feet in the cool, snow melted, crystal clear water. But aside from the campfires and the joys of camping, I am always impressed by stargazing. Though where I live, stars are somewhat difficult to see. Occasionally, I can pick out the Big Dipper and maybe flying plane. But when I was camping, the night sky was filled with a gazillion stars by 10 pm. On top of that, there were several shooting stars, and I could see the milky way so clearly. I guess an analogy of the night sky would be, you scoop up a handful of glitter, and then all of a sudden. ACHOO! Now you have glitter that sprayed everywhere along with your saliva, mucus, bacteria, and other gross things. But aside from having to pick up each stupid glitter piece, the whole area is now sparkling.
